Custom domain not connecting

Resolve issues connecting your custom domain to your creavio portfolio website, including DNS configuration, CNAME records, and SSL certificates.

What's happening

You've added a custom domain to your creavio website but it's not loading, showing an error, or still pointing to your old site. Your creavio portfolio works fine at your default creavio URL but not at your custom domain.

Common causes

  1. DNS records haven't been configured correctly at your domain registrar
  2. DNS changes haven't fully propagated yet (typically 1 to 30 minutes)
  3. The CNAME record is pointing to the wrong destination
  4. SSL certificate hasn't been provisioned yet
  5. The domain is still connected to another hosting provider

How to fix it

1. Verify your DNS records

Log into your domain registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Google Domains, Cloudflare, etc.) and check that you've added the records creavio shows:

  • Type: CNAME, Name/Host: www, Value/Target: customers.creav.io
  • Type: TXT, Name/Host: _creavio, Value: the value shown in creavio

If your DNS provider has no CNAME flattening or ALIAS, set the root domain to forward to www at your registrar. Make sure there are no leftover A records or other CNAME records for www that conflict with this setup.

2. Wait for DNS propagation

DNS changes typically take 1 to 30 minutes. Some providers take longer. If you just made changes, give it time. You can use a tool like whatsmydns.net to check if your DNS records have reached different regions.

3. Remove conflicting records

If your domain was previously connected to another hosting provider, leftover A records or CNAME records can conflict with the creavio CNAME for www. Delete any DNS records for the same hostname that are not part of your creavio setup.

4. Check SSL status

After DNS is properly configured, SSL certificates are provisioned automatically. This can take up to 30 minutes after DNS propagation completes. If your site loads with a security warning, the SSL certificate is still being issued. Wait a bit longer and try again.

5. Confirm domain settings in creavio

Go to Website & Portfolio > Domain Settings in your dashboard. Make sure your custom domain is entered correctly and saved. If the domain status shows an error, try removing it and re-adding it to trigger a fresh verification.

Still not working?

If your domain still isn't connecting after 30 minutes, contact creavio support with your domain name and a screenshot of your DNS records. We'll help diagnose the issue.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for my custom domain to start working?

DNS changes typically take 1 to 30 minutes. After DNS is in place, SSL certificate provisioning can take a little longer. Use whatsmydns.net to check status.

What DNS records do I need to set up for my custom domain?

Add a CNAME for www pointing to customers.creav.io, and a TXT record at _creavio with the value shown in creavio. If your DNS provider has no CNAME flattening or ALIAS, set the root domain to forward to www at your registrar. Remove leftover A records or old CNAME records that conflict with www.

Why does my custom domain show a security warning?

This usually means the SSL certificate hasn't been provisioned yet. SSL certificates are generated automatically after your DNS records are in place. Wait up to 30 minutes. If the warning persists, contact creavio support.
